There are not a lot of poetry reading events here in Mackay, so when I stumbled across this Poetry Slam competition, I jumped on it. It wasn't a large crowd, with only 8 competing poets and two non-competing poetry readings, but despite this, it was a really enjoyable event.
I attended this with my good friend Jac, and we volunteered to be 1 of 5 judges in the audience. So, the pressure was on! 🤣
All readings were really impressive. All were very different, but quite powerful and delivered with emotion. The poet that won was my favourite and the one we scored the highest too. One of the non-competing readings was a mother reading the poem while her deaf daughter signed, and it too was very moving.
But the highlight has to be the improv section, where the audience was given five words and a small amount of time to come up with a poem. The words were Eloquent, Edify, Procrastinate, Void & Hippopotamus. Jac and I quickly scrambled and with time running out we came up with this disaster:
Hippopotamus, why choose this word?
I'm not that intelligent, it's a bit absurd.
Eloquent, edify, procrastinate,
This is how we try to A-Void our fate.
Many snaps to Jac for being brave enough to get up in front of the mic. Our poem certainly wasn't the worse one, but as fate would have it, poor Jac happen to follow probably the best one in the bunch.
