This was on Jill’s original list and Tessa was telling us all how she remembered how hard Jill tried to find a 'Dining in the Dark' event at the time and how disappointed Jill was that she couldn’t find one. However, in true Jill fashion, that didn't stop her from being creative...in lieu of this Jill, along with her sister Megan, went to a cafe, put on blindfolds and ate their meal (with some odd looks no doubt from surrounding patrons).
A big thank you needs to go out to Tessa for making this happen. Tessa was relentless in her efforts in liaising with the venue (that sporadically offers this event) in order to ensure the event would go ahead on one of the days we were in town. And as a result of Tessa’s efforts the venue were very accommodating too. We also had the pleasure of Megan’s company for this one too which made it even more special.
I’ll admit I was a little nervous about this one due to me being a fussy eater. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, it is as it sounds - you dine in complete darkness. Any phones or fitness watches you have are locked away so there are absolutely zero light sources. The waiter’s wear infrared goggles and lead you into the dark to your table. You are then served a three-course meal without knowing what is being served. Although utensils are on the table, I think we all for the most part went the easy route and felt/ate our meals with our fingers. We were quickly able to work out what each of the dishes were and thankfully for me, there was nothing too fancy that I wouldn’t eat.
It was a weird but very fun experience. We all found it so refreshing to not have access or be distracted by our phones and instead be fully immersed in our conversations and enjoy each other’s company. There was never a lull in conversation either (well except for a noticeably quieter period when we were all clearly enjoying our dessert!). And even in the dark I managed to pass off my Asparagus sticks to Megan and we all managed to gently orchestrate a cheers to Jill across the table.
It certainly was a fun night and an experience I’ll never forget. The venue manager was kind enough to take some pictures of us after dinner wearing the waiter's infrared goggles and also show us what our meals were.
And here are some sneaky pictures I took of us in the dark 😉🤣
The look on my face 😖 when I put something very slimy and sour into my mouth (only to be reassured by the ladies it was avocado with balsamic vinegar on it.
