While in Rockhampton I decided to do a Meerkat encounter to cross this one off my list. Once again, I got a sign from Jill, as one of the zookeepers was wearing sunflower earrings. I had to tell her about the meaning behind it and asked for a photo. The other zookeeper said that she changes her earrings all the time and that it must have been a sign for me that she chose to wear those today. I’ve previously never been one big on signs, but I love ones like this in unexpected places. They also told me that they normally have about 4 people booked in, so the Meerkats are usually jumping between people, but the day I chose to book in I was the only one, so I had all 6 Meerkats to myself.
I also love how that I got to hold an African animal. Although they are from South Africa, so not quite where Jill lived, I think I get bonus points for an animal from the same continent! You’re not allowed to pat them, which was very hard to resist doing, but they literally jump all over you for their food and are cutest things ever. Their little claws can be quite sharp, so they recommend being fully covered and there was the occasional nip or two felt on my hands when they were trying to eat their food. Overall, it was great experience, and I would highly recommend. One of zookeepers took SO many photos on my phone but here are just a few below.
Jill loved animals and she even told me in our last phone conversation how she loved my videos of Coco that I post and that they always make her laugh. Here is a picture of Jill with Coco in her last visit to Mackay 💕
