Usually when I think of Jill I think of Sunflowers, but for this day it was all about the poppies. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Mackay had a croquet club. With about 20 items left to complete on the '101 Adventures for Jill' list I thought I would go all out for this one. So, I made it a Ladies Croquet event and extended the invitation to some wonderful friends and colleagues and received such a wonderful response. My friend Robyn suggested to wear traditional white, and my friend Jac suggested hosting it on Remembrance Day, I loved both of these ideas and leaned into it.
I organised an event place to come in to set up a low-lying picnic setting to make it extra special and opted to make some platters myself (more value!).
The event itself could not of have gone better. It was a beautiful day spent with some beautiful people. I bought everyone a poppy to wear and even had some poppy prizes (all purchased from RSL for money to go towards Veterans). Although Remembrance Day is for remembering those who lost their lives in the call of duty, it seemed an appropriate day to host an event in memory of Jill too. None of us had played croquet before and it seems incredible that all these ladies, who didn't even know Jill, were playing croquet for the first time because of her. What an amazing legacy.
Everyone had so much fun! Croquet is fun! And the members of the Mackay Croquet Club could not have been more accommodating and kinder. Hopefully we have raised a bit of publicity for them, but I know we were all keen to play again!
